Description
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S rRNA region of the mitochondrial genome. First described in 2015, MOTS-c was among the earliest mitochondrially-encoded peptides identified as having activity outside the organelle, and it remains a subject of active research in the field of mitochondrial biology.

Preclinical investigations have examined MOTS-c in rodent and cell-culture models of metabolic regulation, AMPK signaling, and glucose handling. Laboratory studies have explored its proposed role as a retrograde signaling molecule between mitochondria and the nucleus, including investigations of its activity under metabolic stress conditions.
