L-Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of L-glutamate, L-cysteine, and glycine, often abbreviated GSH. It is one of the most abundant intracellular thiols and is endogenously synthesized in mammalian cells. First characterized in the late nineteenth century and structurally elucidated in the 1930s, glutathione has been a fixture of biochemical research for nearly a century due to its central role in cellular redox biology.

Research Context

Preclinical research has examined glutathione’s role as a redox buffer, cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes, and substrate in phase II conjugation reactions. Laboratory investigations have studied intracellular GSH:GSSG ratios as a marker of oxidative state in cultured cells and tissues.
