Epithalon is a four-amino-acid synthetic peptide: Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. The sequence was modeled on epithalamin, a peptide preparation from the pineal gland. Vladimir Khavinson’s group at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation published most of the early laboratory work in the 1990s and 2000s, focused on telomerase activity and cellular senescence in cell cultures.

Description

Epithalon (also rendered as epitalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide composed of alanyl-glutamyl-aspartyl-glycine. It was developed in the 1980s by Vladimir Khavinson at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology as a synthetic analog of a peptide fraction reportedly isolated from the pineal gland, and has been studied within the Russian-language biogerontology research tradition.

Research Context

Preclinical investigations have examined Epithalon in laboratory models of telomere biology, telomerase activity, and circadian-related gene expression. Researchers have studied the tetrapeptide in cell-culture systems including human fibroblast lines, with research interest in markers of replicative senescence. Investigations have also explored its activity in rodent aging models within the Russian-language biogerontology literature. Epithalon is frequently cited as a tool compound within the broader category of “peptide bioregulators” studied at the Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, and continues to be of interest in comparative peptide-aging research workflows.
