Description

SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a synthetic tetrapeptide (D-Arg-2′,6′-dimethyl-Tyr-Lys-Phe-NH2) belonging to the Szeto-Schiller family of mitochondria-targeted peptides. First described in the early 2000s, the SS series is characterized by an alternating cationic/aromatic motif designed to localize to the inner mitochondrial membrane independent of mitochondrial membrane potential.

Preclinical research has investigated SS-31 in models of mitochondrial dysfunction, with laboratory studies examining its interaction with cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
