GHK-CU is a copper-binding tripeptide complex: glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine bound to a copper(II) ion. The peptide GHK occurs naturally in human plasma. Loren Pickart’s group did most of the early laboratory work on the copper complex. Cell-model studies look at collagen-related signaling and gene-expression changes in fibroblast cultures.

Description

GHK-Cu is a copper-binding tripeptide composed of glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine complexed with divalent copper (Cu2+). The free tripeptide GHK was first isolated from human plasma by Loren Pickart in 1973, and the copper-bound complex has been a subject of biochemistry and matrix biology research for over five decades.

Research Context

Preclinical investigations have examined GHK-Cu in in vitro models of fibroblast biology, extracellular matrix deposition, and copper transport. Laboratory studies have explored the tripeptide in dermal and connective tissue cell-culture systems, including assays of collagen and decorin synthesis. Researchers have also studied GHK-Cu as a model compound for examining copper coordination chemistry in physiologically relevant peptide ligands, given the well-defined Cu2+ binding site formed by the glycyl-histidyl N-terminal motif. The compound continues to be cited across both peptide biochemistry and trace-metal biology research literature.
