BPC-157 is a 15-amino-acid peptide. The sequence (Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val) was lifted from a section of body protection compound, a larger protein found in human gastric juice. Croatian researchers picked the fragment apart in the early 1990s and synthesized this short version because it survives stomach acid and is easy to make in a lab. It shows up in a lot of preclinical animal-model papers — most of that work looking at nitric oxide signaling, vascular endothelial growth factor, and dopaminergic systems in rats and mice.

Description

BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-amino-acid pentadecapeptide derived from a partial sequence of body protection compound, a protein fragment originally identified in gastric juice. First described in the 1990s by researchers at the University of Zagreb, it has been one of the most extensively studied synthetic peptides within preclinical tissue and gastrointestinal biology research literature.

Research Context

Preclinical investigations have examined BPC-157 in a broad range of rodent models, including studies of gastrointestinal mucosal biology, tendon and ligament fibroblast behavior, and vascular signaling. Laboratory research has explored the peptide’s activity in in vitro models of cell migration, angiogenesis, and nitric oxide pathway interactions. Researchers have also used BPC-157 as a tool compound in studies examining the relationship between short, gastric-derived peptide sequences and tissue repair signaling. The compound continues to be widely cited across preclinical tissue-repair research workflows, and remains a subject of mechanistic investigation across multiple laboratory model systems.
